Contempt of Court

Contempt of court is the offence of disobeying or disrespecting a court order.

In family cases, contempt proceedings can be brought when a spouse does not follow a custody, maintenance or property order. The penalty can be a fine or prison.

Why it matters: a court order is not a suggestion. If your former spouse keeps ignoring one, contempt is one of the ways to make them take it seriously.
